FIFA 2018: Iwobi, Iheanacho send Zambia home crying as Nigeria beat Zambia 2-1 FeaturedWritten by CHARLES BIKUME
Two first-half goals from Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho on Sunday sent the Zambian national team home in sorrow. So, Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Sunday opened their quest for the FIFA World Cup 2018 slated for Russia on a bright note. Playing before a mammoth crow that included President Edgar Lungu at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, Ndola, the Super Eagles defeated Zambia’s Chipolopolo by 2-1.
Both goals came off the mesmerising feet of Alex Iwobi who shot Nigeria into the lead on the 6th minute into the first-half, and gangling Kelechi Iheanacho who rounded off the Zambian goalkeeper before slotting in the ball for Nigeria’s second goal on the 17th minute of the first-half.
The score sheet remained so as the teams went for half-time break.
The Chipolopolo resumed the second half more business-like driving the Super Eagles almost to their half of the field. However, Super Eagles goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme, stood as the Rock of Gibraltar against the Zambians.
The pressure continued even as Chipolopolo missed many scoring chances. The determined Zambians were, however, compensated on the 4th minute into the second half over poor defending by Omeruo, an opportunity Zambian No. 9 Mbesuma fired in for Chipolopolo goal. And it remained all they could score as Nigeria held on to their two goals.
Nigeria’s starting line-up for the game was -
1 Ikeme Carl Onuora, 3 Elderson Echiejile, 4 Kenneth Josiah Omeruo, 5 William Paul Ekong, 8 Brown Ideye, 10 John Obi Mikel, 11 Moses Daddy Simon, 15 Kelechi Promise Iheanacho, 17 Ogenyi Eddy Onazi, 18 Alexander Chuka Iwobi, 21 Onyinye Wilfred Ndidi
